What To Pack For Your Private Big Island Adventure

Recommended Packing List

  • Warm Layers: A warm jacket, sweater, or cover-up is essential, as temperatures can vary drastically across the island, especially at higher elevations or in the evening.
  • Rain Gear: While we provide communal rain gear and umbrellas, we strongly recommend bringing your own personal, waterproof outer layers for individual comfort and fit.
  • Mandatory Footwear: Sturdy, completely closed-toe shoes (sneakers or hiking boots) are MANDATORY for walking on uneven terrain and lava fields. Guests wearing open-toed shoes (sandals, flip-flops) may be excluded from walking portions of the tour.
  • Hydration & Snacks: Stay hydrated! Bring a reusable water bottle (refills available in the van). Feel free to bring any personal snacks you prefer beyond the provided lunch and refreshments.
  • Camera, Sunscreen & Sunglasses: Don't forget your camera to capture the incredible landscapes, and bring sunscreen and sunglasses for protection during daytime exploration.

Important Volcanic Safety Information

The dynamic environment of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park may present unique conditions, including airborne volcanic ash or 'Pele's hair' (fine, glass-like fibers), which may cause skin and eye irritation. As a precautionary measure, we strongly recommend packing:

  • Long Pants
  • Long-Sleeved Top or Jacket
  • A Hat (To protect hair & scalp)
  • An Extra Set of Clothes (In case you need to change due to exposure)

This is a great tour. We got to see and learn so much that there is no way we could have if we had tried to cover it ourselves. Sam, our guide, was exceptional, both in terms of his knowledge and his ability to connect with his guests at a personal level.

The drive to the first stop is over an hour, but Sam talked us through the changing climate and associated flora, fauna, and landscape as we climbed to 10,000 feet above sea level. Then, the stops and attractions came thick and fast, each more fascinating than the other.

The tour is not physically strenuous, and we never felt rushed. The weather was beautiful, but it could get a little cool up at that altitude, so dress appropriately. They provide water and sodas and a picnic lunch at a beautiful spot.

Highly recommended!

We are here with friends from Vegas. First time out to the Big Island. We didn't even have to rent a car to see the whole Island!!
So great to see something not all commercial like VEGAS!! We had no idea Hawaii was such a geologically diverse place- we expected great beaches but there were gorgeous mountains, waterfalls, tropical rain forests, lava flows, even a BLACK SAND BEACH!! And there were even giant turtles on the black sand beach..
I recommend Wayfind Hawaii with their awesome Aloha Spirit! It's REAL too!
